"Um exemplo emblemático é o da função de Dirichlet (Johann
Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet, 1805-1859), $D : [0, 1] \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ dada por:

Essa função, que é descontínua em todos os pontos do domínio, não é integrável segundo
a definição de Riemann. Exatamente aí residia um dos pontos de partida de Lebesgue: a
impossibilidade de encontrar uma primitiva de certas funções (HOCHKIRCHEN, 2003).
Entretanto, exemplos como o que citamos eram vistos com certa desconfiança ainda
no início do século XX. Muitos matemáticos da época diziam que o estudo de tais casos
particulares desviaria os jovens estudantes de problemas mais importantes que ainda estavam
em aberto. Jules Henri Poincaré (1854-1912) partilhava dessa desconfiança: “Antigamente
quando se inventava uma função nova, era com vistas a algum objetivo prático; hoje em dia
inventa-se expressamente para colocar defeito nos raciocínios de nossos pais”

mathematical probability (which must be distinguished from the nonmathematical variety) is a certain specialization of measure theory, distinguished by its own terminology and its field of nonmathematical applications. On the one hand, mathematicians were computing probabilities and expectations, on the other hand mathematicians were computing volumes and masses, and the two fields did not come together until this century. In fact some probabilists resented the invasion of their juicy domain by dry mathematical rigor, and even now almost all probabilists write in the traditional dialect of their subject.
