Polinômios trigonométricos: Toda função escrita como:
$$
 f(x) = a_0 + \sum_{n=1}^{m} a_n cos(nx) + b_n sin(nx)
$$
onde $a_i, b_i$ são números complexos.

Lembrando que $$ cos(x) = \frac{1}{2}(e^{inx} + e^{-inx}) , \, sin(x) = \frac{1}{2i} (e^{inx} - e^{-inx})$$

podemos reescrever $f(x) = \sum_{n=-m}^{m} c_n e^{inx}.$

Dadas $ \phi, \psi$ funções complexas definidas no intervalo $[a, b]$ dizemos que elas são ortogonais se 
$$
 \int_{a}^{b} \phi \bar{\psi} dx =0.
$$
Observe que toda função complexa $\phi$ se escreve como $\phi = \alpha(x) + i \beta(x)$  e com $\int_{a}^{b} \phi dx$ referimos $\int_{a}^{b} \alpha (x) dx + i \int_{a}^{b} \beta(x) dx.$

Uma sequeência de funções $\{ \phi_n\}, \phi_n: [a, b] \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ é dita ortonormal, se 
$$ \int_{a}{b} \phi_n \bar{\phi_m} dx = 0, n\neq m $$ (produto interno ser zero!)
e a norma de cada uma das funções é um:
$$
 \int_{a}^{b} |\phi_n(x)|^2 dx =1.
$$
