Uma função $f: U \subset \mathbb{R}^m \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$ é diferenciável no ponto $p \in U$ se existir uma transformação linear $T : \mathbb{R}^m \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n$ (que chamaremos de derivada no ponto $p,$ $Df_p$) se $$ f(p+u) = f(p)+ T(u) + R(u)$$ onde $\lim_{|u| \rightarrow 0} \frac{R(u)}{|u|} = 0.$
Essa transformação linear pode ser representada por uma matriz $n \times m.$

Dada função $f= (f_1, \cdots, f_n)$ podemos definir derivadas parciais no ponto $p$:
$$
 \frac{\partial f_i}{\partial x_j}(p) = \lim_{h \rightarrow 0} \frac{f_i(p + h e_j) - f_i(p)}{h}.
$$

Provamos que a derivada de uma função no ponto $p$ é caracterizada por seguinte fórmula também:
$$
 Df_p (u) = \lim_{t \rightarrow 0} \frac{f(p+tu)- f(p)}{t}.
$$

Teorema: $f$ diferenciávle em $p$ é contínua neste ponto.

Teorema: Se $f$ é diferenciável então existem todas as derivadas parciais.

Teorema: Se $f$ tem derivadas parciais contínuas em $p$, então $f$ é diferenciável neste ponto e sua derivada é representada pela matriz $A = [a_{ij}]$ onde $a_{ij}= \frac{\partial f_i}{ \partial x_j}(p).$
